Dr. Rabindra Nath Sahoo was former Professor and head of nephrology at SCB Medical College, Cuttack Odisha. He served the Indian Society of Nephrology as president and a member of the governing body. He also held the post of president of the ISN-east zone. He successfully organized the ISNCON at Bhubaneswar in 2006 for the first time in Odisha and also the Indian Society of hemodialysis conference at Bhubaneswar in 2012-13.
After Completing his MBBS & MD from MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, as one of the best outgoing students, he joined Odisha state government service in a remote place called Agarpada now in Bhadrak district. Still, the desire to excel in academics pulled him to join D.M. Nephrology in the prestigious PGIMER, Chandigarh, under legendary Prof.K.S. Chugh.
He completed DM (nephrology) in 1982, and leaving aside the lure of going abroad came back to serve the poor state of Odisha and joined as a faculty in nephrology in 1983. His out of box approach and affinity to newer advances to treatment of Kidney disease endeared him quickly among the students, faculties and patients alike. He was out and out an academician and used to keep himself updated with the latest developments of nephrology.
His dedication to patient care was outstanding. He used to spend most of the time in the hospital wards. He has several research papers published in national and international journals; his particular interest was Acute Kidney disease, especially Malaria associated AKI.
He has been bestowed with various awards and accolades, among which the dearest to him was the fellowship of Indian Society of nephrology (FISN) and Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana award by Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, New Delhi for his excellent and dedicated service to the Community in the field of nephrology.
His legacy was marked by his sincerity, dedication, and empathy to patients, students and colleagues and never- ending desire to serve the poor with commitment, and last but not the least is the dazzling and smiling persona.
The state has lost a guiding force in nephrology, but his contribution to the Indian Society of Nephrology and Odisha nephrology forum would ensure better Kidney health for several people in the time to come.
He is survived by his spouse Dr.Bharati Sahoo, a reputed Pediatrician, son Biswaranjan and daughter Dr. Nibedita.
