In this exclusive with Medical Dialogues, Dr. Yakshi Chugh discusses a recent original research article published in the Indian Journal of Nephrology on infection patterns and survival among renal transplant recipients in India. The study analyzed 255 infection episodes across 118 patients between 2014 and 2021, identifying bacterial and viral infections—particularly UTIs and COVID-19—as the most common. BK virus and COVID-19 were associated with graft loss, and most deaths due to infections were COVID-related. Despite the infection burden, patient and graft survival rates were comparable to Western data, underscoring the role of effective management in transplant outcomes.
