The Indian Journal of Nephrology (IJN) has been a trusted source of information for the kidney health community in India for more than 30 years. It has been a platform for researchers, clinicians, and educators from the region to share their expertise and findings in the field of nephrology. However, as the field of kidney health continues to evolve, so must the IJN. With a new editorial team at the helm, we aim to usher in a new era of the IJN – one that is more in tune with the needs and aspirations of modern-day kidney health professionals, and one that presents content in a contemporary, responsive, professional, and accessible way.

The new direction of the IJN will be guided by four key principles: quality, diversity, transparency, and relevance. We believe that by prioritizing these principles, we can create a journal that not only meets the needs of our readers, but also sets the standard for biomedical publications in India.

Quality will be at the forefront of all our decisions. From the content of the articles to the design and layout of the journal, we will strive for excellence in every aspect. We want to ensure that the articles we publish are of the highest quality, both in terms of scientific rigor and writing style. To that end, we will be introducing a professional and rigorous management and improved peer review process. We will also be working with expert graphic designers and layout specialists to ensure that the journal is presented in a professional and accessible way.

Diversity is another key principle that will guide the new direction of the IJN. We recognize that a broad and diverse group of stakeholders is involved in the provision of kidney health, and we want to ensure that the IJN reflects that diversity. We will be introducing a greater range of article types, including original articles, opinion pieces, commentaries, debates, research letters, case discussions, guidelines, and reviews, to ensure that there is something for everyone in each issue. We also want to ensure that the voices of all members of the kidney health community including but not limited to nurses, technicians, nutritionists, and patients, are represented in the journal, and we will be actively seeking out contributions from a diverse range of authors at all career stages.

The new editorial team at the IJN is committed to improving the efficiency and transparency of the article submission and review process. Our submission and review process will be streamlined, utilizing the latest technological tools to reduce the time from submission to final disposal. We recognize that the time and intellectual investment made by the volunteer reviewers are crucial and we commit to use them in a respectful manner.

Finally, relevance is perhaps the most important principle that will guide the new direction of the IJN. We want to ensure that the articles we publish are of utmost relevance to the South Asian kidney health community. This means that we will prioritize research of direct relevance to the South Asian context and to those seeking to learn from the experience in the region. We will prioritize articles on topics of contemporary public health importance. We want the IJN to be a platform for discussion and debate, and believe that by focusing on topics that are of direct relevance to our readers, we can facilitate important conversations, contribute to knowledge generation, and drive progress in the field of kidney health in the region.

Communication in the digital age has evolved significantly, and we believe that it is important for the IJN to adapt and innovate. We will utilize a range of communication tools, including social media, to amplify the voice and reach of the journal and to engage with our readers in new and innovative ways. We will also be exploring the addition of multimedia content, such as videos, podcasts, and infographics, to enhance the reading experience and provide more interactive and engaging content for our readers.

As the field of nephrology continues to evolve, we believe that the IJN has an important role to play in shaping its future in the region and beyond. We aim to move the IJN in the direction that meets the needs and aspirations of our readers and also pushes the boundaries of what is possible in the field of kidney health. We are excited to embark on this journey, and invite you to join us on this new chapter of the continued growth and success of the IJN.
